Thickening Atmosphere of the Spring Festival in Ancient Xi’an

  On January 23, 2012 (the first day of the first lunar month), 2012 Qujiang Spring Festival Celebration and Springtime Festivities with Hundreds of Folk Arts of Shaanxi (hereafter referred to as the Spring Festival Ceremony) was opened at pavilion A and the square of harmony of Qujiang International Conference and Exhibition Center.

  The Spring Festival Celebration was jointly hosted by Shaanxi Provincial Department of Culture, Northwest University, Xi’an Municipal Bureau of Culture, Radio, TV, Press and Publication and Administrative Committee of Qujiang New Area, undertaken by Xi’an Qujiang Cultural Industry Investment (Group) Co., Ltd., sponsored by Xi’an Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Center and Shaanxi Cultural Industry Research Institute of Northwest University, operated by Qujiang International Conference and Exhibition (Group) Co., Ltd., implemented by West China (Xi’an) Cultural Industries Expo Co., Ltd. and Shaanxi Yijiu Trade Co., Ltd. and supported by Shaanxi Provincial Tourism Administration, Xi’an Evening News, Xi’an TV Station and Xi’an Communication and Tourism Radio (104.3) as a large-scale folk culture festival.

  The Spring Festival Celebration was themed Spending a Happy Spring Festival and Enriching Springtime with Folk Arts. It was started on January 23, 2012 and ended on February 6 (From the first day to the fifteen day of the first lunar month). In this period, wonderful folk cultures all around Shaanxi would make their debut. They included more than 150 performances of over 30 folk arts, such as Xi’an Ancient Drum Music listed into Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and renowned as living fossil of ancient Chinese music, Chord Plate Tune Shadow Play reputed as provincial intangible cultural heritage project, ancient vehicle-mounted steel bracket Shehuo (springtime festivity) prevailing with a long history in Shijiazhai Town of Lantian County, hobbyhorse from hobbyhorse club of Zhouzhi County with a history of hundreds of years, ancient land boat sailing, Yangge and storytelling from North Shaanxi, Qin Opera and Yu Opera.

  Moreover, folk culture and intangible cultural heritage exhibition areas were arranged in pavilion A of Qujiang International Conference and Exhibition Center to show ladle mask, clay sculpture of Fengxiang County, traditional weave straw sandals made by Ma Xinling from Jiaodai of Lantian County, hand knitting, paper-cut of Zhouzhi County, painted clay sculpture made by Hu Shen from Fengxiang County, microscopic jade carvings, traditional cloth arts, Beizhang paper making, cotton clothes of Qianyang County and other folk traditional arts. Local residents of Xi’an have not only enjoyed wonderful manual skills on the site but also selected and procured their favorite fine folk handiworks for their relatives and friends as gift.

  In this event, fantastic folk cultural arts and performances have attracted about 20,000 residents of Xi’an and around Xi’an. Most visitors said they have watched shadow play, ancient Xi’an drum music and other intangible heritage performances on the site for the first time and they have expressed deep admiration to artists devoted into folk arts and people trying to carry out and disseminate excellent Chinese cultures.

  Meanwhile, the 2012 Spring Festival Celebration has made full response to the call of the Sixth Plenary Session of the Sixth Central Committee of CPC for supporting excellent arts representing national standards and having both national features and local features, positively developing new artistic forms, maintaining basic elements of national culture and building excellent traditional culture into the spiritual strength encouraging people to move forward in the new era. It is of great significance to focus on practices in China, reflect people’s subject status and real life, promote quality of cultural products and carry forward fine cultural works featuring profound thoughts, having elaborate arts and attracting common people.

  The Spring Festival Celebration has brought a grand audio and video folk culture feast in the Spring Festival of 2012 to residents and tourists of Xi’an and enabled common people to tangibly feel profoundness and eternal charm of intangible cultural heritage and traditional folk culture, thus thickening atmosphere of the Spring Festival in ancient Xi’an.
